How to Find Work as a Freelancer
You might say “That all sounds great but how do I find projects from clients willing to pay me?”
Our good friend the Internet is back to help you once again!
The newspaper “Help Wanted” ads have been replaced by online “project marketplaces” like Fabio's eLance.com. Just like eBay matches buyers and sellers of old stuff from your garage, project marketplaces help employers find independent contractors for projects where they need help.
If you have skills you’d like to put to work in your after-hours or on weekends, or if you want to start building a practice of your own around a new skill set, offering your services through project marketplaces like eLance.com, oDesk.com, Guru.com, or others online is a great place to start.
These marketplaces host thousands of project requests for all sorts of freelance services that you can consider offering yourself.
You Don’t Have to Be a CEO
While enhancing your skills through project-based work online you can also avoid the pressure of coming up with a big idea to start a new company. Instead you can "upsource" the hassle, the responsibility, and many of the administrative requirements of starting a formal business by working for others.
Online freelancer services like Elance.com make this easy for you. They handle all the billing, timesheets, and collections for you and the services are free to use. You figure out which kinds of projects you like and you only bid on those that will continue to excite you even after you come home from a long day at work.
Freelancing Can Be Your Entry Point to a New Career and Lifestyle
Now I know freelancing like this is not the answer for everybody.
Most of the emphasis online (including in my blog, books, and the ClickMillionaires.com Forum) is that you need to come up with your own idea and then build that into a company.
I’m still a big fan of that approach and that’s where I’d like to see you end up. But starting as a part-time freelance contractor may be your entry point to profitable self-employment, with a lot less risk than starting your own company.
Freelancing is a little different from my normal Click Millionaires approach, but it’s an opportunity for you. It’s up to you how much you work, and what kind of projects you pick. But if you explore and learn and get paid along the way, you might be able change careers or even reinvent yourself around a Click Millionaire lifestyle business that you love.
