Which Domain Names should I buy?

Scott,

I have been thinking about domain names and my question is how important is it to buy .NET, .INFO, .ORG, .CO, .US domain names as well as the .COM name?

Additionally, is it smart to buy the plural or singular form?  If I would like my new domain to be example.com, should I also register examples.com?

This may seem silly, but I would hate to buy a new domain name and have a competitor pop up because I didn't do my due diligence.

SCOTT FOX'S ANSWER

Hi Jennifer,

This is a great question.  You are smart to think this through before your competitors catch on and buy your domain name's variations. 

Of course you should start by buying .COM.  The .COM domain extension is still the clear leader, especially in the US. 

After that how many domain names you buy depends on your outlook for the business and your budget.

I usually buy .NET since that's the second most recognized extension and I also buy .TV because I think the whole web is turning into something like interactive television.  (You can make a similar argument for buying .MOBI domains, too.)

.ORG is also nice if your business has a non-profit or charity angle to it.

I usually stop there.  Even though they have been available for years I still have never seen a serious business using .WS, .BIZ, .INFO, .US, etc. 

Also, spelling variations can be valuable.  Plurals and common misspellings are important if you are getting a lot of traffic and/or have an easily misspelled (or just mis-typed) domain. 

I usually buy the 1 or 2 most obvious ones of those variations also.

You can see that this is quickly adding up... 

So, the bottom line is to look at your wallet and compare your budget to your growth projections.  Buy a few domains today to get started and protect yourself, then buy more as your business grows and makes the variations more valuable and also brings in revenues to pay for them.

However, if you're super confident in your new biz and have the money, I would buy all the domain name extensions that you can afford.  It's a cheap form of insurance against competitors squatting on your turf.

Which domain name should I use? (Cheap PPC Market Testing!)

Dear Scott Fox,

I've hit a roadblock in building my new website business. I have 10 domain names registered but do not know which one to choose.

Do I pick the domain name that's the easiest to remember, the easiest to spell, the one that might be the best for SEO, or???

I am at a loss as to which domain name to pick and it's holding things up. Thank you!!

Hi Michael,

Congrats on the progress with your new web site business!

If you don't have a strong "gut" inclination about which domain name to use, I would let the audience tell you which domain name they like the best. 

A clever way to test domain name popularity like this is by testing with Pay-Per-Click text ads. Here's how to test domain name variations inexpensively:

1. Take $50 or $100 to buy ads on Google Adwords (or Facebook ads might be even better since your new site's services are hobby-related).

2. For each of the domains you can't choose between use the keywords in each domain name to create the headline of a new text ad.

3. Instruct Adwords to display your new ads to Google users who search on keywords related to your new products.

4. Use the URL being tested in each ad to link these ads to a page that says something simple like "Coming soon - leave us your email address for notification when this site launches."  (This helps you begin building an email list of potential customers for later.)

5. Let the ads run for a week or until you get enough clicks to demonstrate which keywords/domain names attract the most clicks from the public.

If the ad using the keywords from one domain name gets a lot more clicks then your choice is easy.  And if they all attract equal clicks (unlikely) you'll know that your choices are all pretty good.

This simple market research and testing exercise will let the audience objectively tell you which domain names and branding are the most catchy and attractive to your target audience BEFORE you launch!

This testing will add a few more days to your timeline, but the results can make a major difference in your web site's long-term ability to attract more customers online profitably.

5 Free SEO Website Design Tricks to Improve Your Search Engine Rankings

Do you have to pay big money to search engine optimization (SEO) consultants to get your site ranked in the search engines? 

NO!  Here are 5 of my favorite no-cost web site design tricks that can help your web site attract more customers for FREE.

Note – none of these free SEO techniques require spending any money with SEO consultants!

1. Upgrade Your Domain Name – Search engines rank sites based on their relevance to the searcher’s queries. If your web site’s domain name does not include your most important keywords, it may be time to upgrade. Change your domain name to one that includes key search terms and you’ll see a rise in SEO rankings for those terms. (This only applies to new sites or sites without much established SEO history, so be careful.)

2. Focus Your Keywords and Use them in Titles - Use free keyword tools like Google’s Traffic Estimator to determine the most popular words and phrases that customers use to search for your key products. Pick a specific version of that keyword phrase to use repeatedly in the titles of your blog posts and pages, especially on the product detail pages.

Being specific and focused in this keyword deployment will help drive your site’s search engine rankings up for that key phrase more effectively than if you try to use multiple versions and synonyms of your keywords. So use the words “hot dog” as much as you can in the titles and on the pages that sell your hot dog products.  And don’t confuse the search engines (and human customers) by also including on that page mentions of other your products like bratwursts, sausages, hamburgers, too.

3. Ditch Your Old Slogan – Replace your “corporate speak” slogan from the 1990s with a modern, keyword-driven one instead. No one knows what “Reaching for Excellence” means anyway. And they certainly aren’t searching on that phrase when looking for your web site that sells hot dogs.

Try something specific that both humans and search engines will appreciate more like “The Most Award-winning and Tasty Hot Dogs in Omaha”. Post that keyword-rich phrase in text (not graphics) at the top of your web site pages and it will help boost your SEO.

4. Use Keywords in File Names – Both web designers and developers like things “efficient” and “clean.” This often means that designers name their images and developers name their web pages with short, secret code-like names.

Instead, you want images of your hot dogs titled with names like “tastyhotdog.jpg”. Similarly, your web site’s pages should have names like “tasty-hot-dogs-and-catering.html” instead of “h4rrjxb.html”. The repeated use of keywords in both of these not so obvious types of file names will provide Google, Bing, and Yahoo additional clues about how to categorize your web site and where to rank it higher.

5. Anchor Text - When other sites link back to yours, ask them to include your keywords in the text that they link. For example, a link to your site XYZ.com is good, but much better from a search engine’s point of view is a link that says “XYZ.com Hot Dogs” if you are a hot dog merchant.

In all these cases the more keywords your site has on the page, the higher the search engines will rank your site for those keywords. Pick your keywords wisely and you can attract tons of free traffic from search engine users searching for info on those topics.
