What blog platform should I use for my new blog? Wordpress, Typepad, Blogger? Have you been asking yourself this common blogging question?
Watch this short video for my answer! I'd like to help you make the best choice for your e-business needs but the options for blog software can be confusing, especially if you are new to blogging and web site design.
As you can see from this blog platform review video, I recommend Typepad as the best blogging platform for easy e-business startups. In fact, I use Typepad myself for ScottFox.com and I'm an affiliate, too.

What's your favorite blogging software?
Do you agree with my recommendation or are you a Wordpress fan?
p.s. More details on Typepad are here, including my review of the Typepad blog platform.

Typepad charges a monthly fee. The others don't. Here in Indonesia, the monthly fee is the same value as 8-16 meals. That's important to many people world wide. Typepad used to be much more difficult to use but it's gotten better - the difficultness was a deterent to quick posts - especially photos. The whole 'language' visible to the user has improved. Do you get a commission for recommending them? I've always wondered because so many people use the others... This is important to me now as I need to set up two more blogs and the timing of the newsletter about this was just in time!!

Hi Jashim and Darsih,
Yes, many people prefer Wordpress. But as I discuss in the video, I find Wordpress to be a bit too techie to use easily. For newbies I think Typepad is better.
Also yes, Typepad does cost a few $$ per month where WP is free. That can make the difference for many people. But if you are blogging for business, I think it's important to have the best tools so you can make back that money and a lot more.
Also, you can run multiple sites/blogs under one Typepad account. I run 15+ different sites in my account through one handy administration dashboard for only $19.95/month. That's pretty cheap...
Last, yes, I'm an affiliate for Typepad. That means I get a commission if you buy through my links (but that doesn't cost you any more, it's a marketing expense to Typepad).
However, I recommend Typepad mostly because I use it myself. Typepad powers this ScottFox.com site you are using right now!
So I recommend Typepad because I think it's the best solution.
Thanks for your comments.

Hi Scott,
I found the video very useful and I agree with your conclusions. I've read the phrase "hacked WordPress blog" more times than I can remember, so I think that it's worth paying a small fee, if only for the peace of mind offered when professionals are taking care of security.
While we're on the subject of hosted blogs, I noticed that tumblr.com wasn't included in the comparison. Is there a reason that you didn't mention it?
Anyway, thanks for the video; your honest & direct style is much appreciated.

Ah! I forgot to mention something to Darsih -- TypePad Micro is a reduced-feature blogging service that *doesn't* charge a fee at all...

Hi John,
Good point about Typepad Micro. Thanks for mentioning it.
I didn't talk about that or Tumblr for the simple reason that I haven't used those services much. I only recommend services that I use myself or have at least tested extensively.
Glad to hear a vote for Typepad - everyone seems so charmed by Wordpress but in my experience those people are a bit techie and like all the tweaking required for WP success.
Thanks for visiting!

Every time I search something in google many platforms I see are from blogspot and very very few from word press, I think it is because blogger is either owned by google or it just get ranked higher than wordpress. I mean not stand alone sites.
Posted by: Chris | October 16, 2010 at 06:45 AM
Hi Chris,
I think the reason is actually a bit simpler:
Wordpress makes it easier to "map" a domain name to its blogs than Blogspot/Blogger does.
That means that Wordpress bloggers can replace the wordpress.com domain with their own domain name. That's why you rarely see blogs with wordpress.com in their addresses any more.
Thanks for visiting to comment!

With Typepad charging now, I recommend that my clients go with WordPress. There's just so much you can do with it that it makes a great choice for anyone who might want to add various types of functionality in the future. Wordpress all the way!

Sometimes Wordpress, Typepad, and Blogger may not be enough for your business. It's often best to hire someone.

Really?
What a surprise to hear that from someone who is spamming my comments under the name "Web Site Content Writing Services"!
Thanks for commenting but we've removed your link. More "real" comments are still welcome.
Best,

Very helpful video – you hear about some of these sites, but simply seeing what the back office looks like can be the thing that makes you actually decide to check them out.

I agree with you, Typepad is the best blogging platform I've seen so far. It is user friendly and easy to manage.
Posted by: Abmelaine | May 11, 2011 at 11:21 PM
I think it depends a lot on what you are using the blog for. I will agree that Typepad and even Wordpress are best for business type blogs, but Blogger is so easy that I think the casual blogger will find it most attractive. They all offer their fair share of advantages and disadvantages, and depending on your needs, one or more of them may be right for you. My best advice would be to determine your goal for blogging and then figure out which blogging platform can help you achieve that best with the resources you have (money, time, internet savvy). Thanks, always interesting to see different peoples opinions on this topic.

Hi Steve,
I agree. But pretty much everyone here is looking for advice on making money with a blog, not just hobby blogging.
I don't know of any profitable, professional blogs that run on Blogger.
(Although Google seems to be upgrading its whole strategy in social media with the release of Google+ and upgrades to related services, so Blogger is likely to improve its offerings soon, too.)
Thanks for the comment.
