Here's how your web site can attract more fr-ee traffic from search engines. These 3 basic steps can greatly improve your site's SEO ranking AND they will cost you nothing to implement:
1. Choose the Right Keywords: SEO is all about careful repetition of the keywords associated with your web site’s product or services. Use tools like Google Adwords' fr.ee keyword tool (www.googlekeywordstool.com) to find the most popular search terms related to your business. Picking only a few key words and phrases to focus on will help to increase your site's search engine ranking.
2. Install the Keywords in the Right Places on Your Site: This means using your keywords in the titles of your pages, in the meta tags, and in the visible text on your site’s pages. Repeated use of these keywords, and related variations, are important signals to the search engine crawlers on how to categorize and rank your web site in their listings.
3. Collect Link Backs Using Anchor Text: Much of search engine ranking is calculated based on how many other sites link to yours. Collect links back to your site from popular social media sites (like Facebook, Digg, or Squidoo), from posting on blogs or in forums, and by asking related web sites to exchange links with you. Any relevant link is good, but even better are links back that contain your keywords in the link itself. This is called “anchor text.” If the links back to your site also contain your key words in their visible text, the search engines will view each such link as another “vote” for your site’s importance specifically for that topic.
If you can master these 3 basic SEO principles, you'll be well on your way to SEO success. Many consultants will charge you thousands of dollars simply to implement a plan like this one.
My advice? At least try to do SEO yourself!
It's not as difficult as you think (or as most SEO consultants make it sound!)
Modern marketing is dependent on having a strong search engine "product presence." Try pursuing these steps yourself and you'll quickly understand both SEO and online marketing better.

Hi Scott,
I think we could add here the importance of using outbound links to related blog posts elsewhere on the Net using appropriate anchor text in the hopes of attracting first visits through track back then hopefully inbound links using similar anchors.

Does this work for blogs as well or just websites? I'm focussing on my blog, which links to my online shops...

Yes, Sandra.
A blog is just a type of website, so these tips apply there (and to your online store, too).
Best,
