My best recommendation for an autoresponder service is Aweber. 

An autoresponder is an email service that allows you to automatically respond to emails you receive from your audience.  They are commonly used to queue up a series of emails for delivery on specified dates or intervals.  Because they can be "pre-programmed" like this, autoresponders are great tools for delivery of marketing campaigns and for "keeping in touch" with your subscriber list.

While the Aweber autoresponder system is best known for its autoresponder capabilities, it can also serve many of the purposes of an Email Management/Publishing system like Constant Contact, too.  It collects email addresses, helps users to easily subscribe/unsubscribe, etc.

Aweber offers a 30 day Free Trial that is well worth it.  Their full service costs only $19.95/month and includes unlimited emails to your list, too.  That's very cost-effective - probably less than 1 sale per month from your emailings.

The Aweber autoresponder service is used by almost every automated publishing newsletter that I receive.  Its dominance of the industry clearly demonstrates the value they provide.  (I use Aweber myself and am an affiliate, too.)

Setting up an on-going series of automated follow-up emails is one of the easiest ways to make more money from your customers.

I already use an email messaging system which does provide a degree of automated messages but is not as comprehensive as aweber.

My question is... if I change to another system such as aweber, can I transfer my existing database of people who have already registered on my website without asking the members for their permission?

Hello Clare,
No, not usually. Different services have different settings but at a minimum your list members are likely to receive a notice of the change.
And best practices for the email marketing industry usually require you to send a new confirmation email to your list members before the service (like Aweber) will import them.
There are also legal issues to consider given the privacy policy under which you collected the emails and your local laws (which may be different for you in the UK than they are here in the US).
To help encourage subscribers to make the switch with you (and opt-in again), you might consider offering a "bonus" of some sort to those who click to confirm their transfer to your new service, too.

Autoresponders: I love them. Never has there been a more awesome tool that can take care of your business as you sleep. Also, the fact that you can setup the delivery to send certain messages in sequence when someone has signed up to your list is great.

It seems everybody promotes AWeber as being the best, so I joined AWeber for their $1 one-month trial. It was quick to do a basic form, but when I wanted to move one step past the basic stuff, I found AWeber's online help and videos useless. Is there anywhere one can get proper training - aimed at a newbie who doesn't understand these things?
